Australia's captain Poised for a Key Part in Ashes Series

Australian cricket captain

Pat Cummins has secured 309 wickets in 71 five-day games with an impressive average.

The Australian chief selector Bailey has declared that skipper Cummins will be a central figure in this winter's England-Australia contest.

There were concerns that Cummins might be unavailable due to a ongoing back issue that had not yet healed.

Earlier indications from team management suggested no definitive call had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the Test matches scheduled to begin on 21 November in the WACA.

He revealed that Cummins is "building up" and was "optimistic" about the prospects of participating.

"We know that the clock is ticking and there are permutations around that, not just the physical problem, but additional elements," he commented.

"We're encouraged. There's strong faith that he will feature a key capacity. Ideally from the opening match. If not, we'll adjust."

Past Concerns

Cummins was ruled out the ODI and T20 games against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals in the previous weeks after scans revealed a lumbar bone stress.

There is a track record of spinal problems, with recurrences in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 forcing him out of three Australian summers in a limited period.

He emphasized he would be proactive in his approach in his comeback strategy to ensure his availability for the series.

He mentioned that there was no confirmation if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his comeback but admitted it was "getting tight" for him to be fit for the initial match.

Contingency Plans

If he's unavailable, ex-skipper Smith will assume leadership.

Versatile player Green was recently pulled out from the ODI lineup for their ODI contests against the subcontinent side as a precautionary measure because of discomfort in his torso.

The selector characterized it as a "minor" injury and stated that he'll feature in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "in a good place to deliver overs."

"Considerable effort has gone into developing the strategy for him to take part for the first Test as an batting and bowling option," the selector detailed.

"His involvement was limited to the starting games anyway. How he handles the bat in limited-overs, should it hinder progress for 24 more hours, we opted to adopt a safer strategy."
