Cancellieri Displays Brief Sparks of Exceptional Talent in Bright Spot for Struggling Lazio

The mood at the Stadio Olimpico was far from happy during the weekend fixture. Lazio were trailing against Torino, a team that had let in ten goals while netting just two in their most recent five league matches. Ultras from the Curva Nord were wrapping up their latest protest in a continuous dispute with chairman Claudio Lotito.

This Year's Efforts Falling Apart?

Had their campaign coming unstitched, or did there exist any cohesion maintaining its structure to start with? They reappointed Maurizio Sarri as manager during the off-season, only for him admitted that the management had not mentioned the transfer ban they were set to be hit with for fiscal problems. Speculation that he might quit were not true, but he acknowledged that Lotito had "deceived" him.

The Biancocelesti became as messy on the pitch as they were off it, overcoming Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but losing their other opening fixtures, which included the capital clash. At any given moment, it's been difficult to tell if they are improving or self-destructing.

The Youngster's Unexpected Comeback

One individual kept smiling throughout. Matteo Cancellieri was not even supposed to remain with Lazio this season. He spent the previous campaign with Parma on loan and, early this summer, Lazio were advocating for him to remain there for another season. The registration embargo led to a change of plans. They were unable to reduce their roster lacking backup options.

He joined originally when Sarri was last in charge, at that time a 20-year-old graduate of Verona's academy. He recorded 20 matches in the league in Lazio colors in that campaign, almost all of those coming off the bench. The club's longtime sporting director, Igli Tare, who departed at the end of that season, later stated Sarri of "promising everyone Cancellieri would be a star but then not selecting him."

Discovering His True Position

It's possible the coach was continuing to attempt to work out the nature of Cancellieri's abilities. Billed as an attacking winger upon signing, Cancellieri nevertheless spent most of that campaign as an unconvincing alternative to Ciro Immobile at No 9. During 63 outings during spells with Empoli and Parma in the past two years, he scored seven times. Shoehorn
