EU Could Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Official Says

The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the US on five Europeans involved in combating digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official stated.

EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions were placed on figures who have been at the heart of campaigns to introduce legislation regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in condemning the decision.

The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

The DSA is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders argue the regulations are essential to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This row threatens to become a facet of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict between Washington and Europe.
