Nepal's Political Scene Witnesses Significant Alliance Formed By Media Personality and Former Musician Mayor

In a notable development ahead of the upcoming national polls, two prominent figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance emerges in the wake of large-scale and fatal young people's demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the ouster of the incumbent government.

A Commitment to Address Young People's Concerns

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially vowed to prioritize the issues raised by the younger generation. This promise comes after the violent anti-corruption unrest that took place in September, which led to considerable casualties.

"Agreement should not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane after the deal was signed.

The September revolt was triggered by widespread frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a catalyst for deeper discontent stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and persistent allegations of deep-rooted political corruption.

Details of the Fresh Political Agreement

According to the official agreement, the positions for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling broad discontent with the country's older political leadership. He has in the past held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key player in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He was instrumental in setting up the caretaker government that came to power after the ousted administration was removed.

Broader Political Consultations Taking Place

In a separate event, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend held meetings with several leading political figures. These talks included ex- prime ministers and the presidents of rival major parties, marking the first such dialogue since the period of the protests.

After these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to state that holding a free and fair election is a shared duty. The statement affirmed the government's dedication to guaranteeing a safe and open atmosphere for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
