A recent study reveals that individuals who discontinue blockbuster slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover lost weight much more quickly than those who stop traditional diet and exercise programs.
Published data in a prominent medical journal shows that while overweight individuals often shed about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"Individuals buying these medications should be aware of the risk of quick rebound weight gain when the medication concludes," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain implies a reversion to pre-treatment mass in about a year and a half.
Analyzing Therapies
The analysis, which looked at 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the results of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.
Scientists point out that individuals who shed pounds through dieting usually have a more gradual creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
Understanding the Rapid Regain
Doctors believe the mechanism of the injections accounts for the amplified rebound.
These medications mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.
"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations several times higher than normal may cause the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could diminish responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement means appetite is unsuppressed, making overeating a significant risk."
An Ongoing Disease?
Medical guidelines recommend the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals contend that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment might need to be life-long.
This perspective is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "highlight the chronic character of obesity," akin to managing diseases like hypertension.
User Experiences
Individuals who have discontinued the jabs explain a powerful resurgence of hunger.
"It was like a switch that goes on and you're instantly ravenous," said a patient.
The struggle is compounded if patients have not developed permanent dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.
Widespread Adoption
Survey data suggest that millions of people in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with desire remaining high.
- Adoption is more common among women compared to males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
- Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, researchers stress that while these medications are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent fix and lasting health benefits relies on combined lifestyle changes.
