Wimbledon Introduces Video Challenge Technology in 2025.

Wimbledon tennis court with replay technology

The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in employing video review technology.

Replay systems will make its debut at The Championships this year.

Players are granted the ability to question specific rulings from the chair umpire, echoing the system currently in operation at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.

The new system will be accessible on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This move arrives only a season following the AELTC rolled out electronic line calling, which terminated the longstanding tradition of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Players will not be permitted to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the umpire to re-examine other situations, including:

  • If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • If a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or person during play.
  • Potential interference at the conclusion of a point.

Importantly, there will be an unlimited number on the amount of reviews a competitor can initiate.

Case in Point

An illustrative incident took place in a recent tournament recently, where a top player initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.

Draper conceded it was a tough call for the official, but believed his opponent had "played the rules effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and ruled Draper was responsible for interference, awarding the rally to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

This technology aren't new for Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit will have the system in place at every one of its events.

Other Changes

Another change at The Championships this year will be the introduction of visual indicators on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This solves instances where the crowd have occasionally been uncertain if a shot was in or out.

In other news, with precisely 100 days to go until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have also announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
